Research Interests
My interests are broadly in medical imaging and computer graphics, with a particular emphasis on applying engineering techniques to solve clinical problems. I have been mainly concerned over the last few years with improving the analytic techniques applied to the imaging of bone. In particular, I am interested in precise measurements of surface-based characteristics of bone (for instance cortical thickness) from low resolution whole-body clinical CT scanners.
I have worked with Dr Ken Poole (Dept. of Medicine) on several studies concerning both the proximal femur and vertebrae. Surface-based measurements can be used to reveal exactly where bone is improved by both drug and exercise regimes, as well as which parts of the cortex are particularly related to fracture risk.
My research is within the Medical Imaging group in the Information Engineering division of the Department of Engineering. I lead the Biomedical Engineering theme, which derived from the Engineering for Clinical Practice initiative and focuses on improving clinical tools by the application of engineering research, techniques and innovation to the field of clinical medicine.
